The White House announced three new intended federal district court nominees on Wednesday,
including former U.S. Representative Anthony Brindisi (D-N.Y.). Brindisi, who served in
Congress from 2019 to 2021, is currently fulfilling duties as a judge on the New York State
Court of Claims in Utica, N.Y. His nomination arrives amidst long-standing circumstances
surrounding Judge David Hurd’s position on the US District Court for the Northern District
of New York.
In a noteworthy development, Judge Hurd had initially planned to retire but later
rescinded his letter of intent in 2022 when his preference for a successor situated in
Utica was unmet. Hurd’s decision effectively halted the previous nomination of Albany
lawyer Alberto Rodriguez to the seat. Brindisi’s nomination could potentially stabilize
this judicial role, addressing Hurd’s stipulations and securing a smooth transition for
the court’s operations.
