Tensions Rise Between Legal Ops Teams and In-House Counsel Despite Budget Increases

While legal operations teams remain crucial assets within corporate structures, a new report from Axiom unveils significant challenges in their collaboration with in-house legal counsel. The survey, which included 200 legal operations professionals, indicated that a substantial 83% experienced budget increases over the past year. However, this financial optimism starkly contrasts with views from general counsel, as revealed in a separate Axiom survey, where 96% reported budget cuts or hiring freezes.

Crucially, the interplay between legal ops teams and their lawyer colleagues often proves fraught. Every respondent in the legal ops study noted that tension over power dynamics or decision-making authority exists, with more than 40% of them reporting such issues frequently. This tension is particularly acute among legal ops members who are not licensed lawyers, who often find themselves excluded from decision-making processes, especially on matters related to new technology adoption.

The report highlights that ‘difficult colleagues and office politics’ is the leading cause of burnout and stress, underscoring a significant operational hurdle. Given the pivotal role legal operations play in technology adoption and departmental efficiency, these relational frictions should indeed raise ‘alarm bells’ for general counsel. The full findings can be explored in Axiom’s article, Bridging the Divide: Optimizing Legal Department Performance through Legal Ops, AI, and In-House Collaboration.
