Five UK Environmental Activists Jailed Amid Rising Climate Protest Incarcerations

On Tuesday, five environmental activists affiliated with the advocacy group Just Stop Oil were remanded to prison in the UK, pushing the total number of individuals jailed for climate action in the country to 26, according to Just Stop Oil’s statement. The activists appeared at Manchester Magistrates’ Court where they were charged with intentionally or recklessly causing a public nuisance after a series of arrests near Manchester Airport on Monday. Greater Manchester Police disclosed that items found in their possession suggested preparations for substantial disruption to the airport’s operations (JURIST).

Chief Superintendent Mark Dexter emphasized the coordinated efforts with Manchester Airports Group and other partners to thwart disruptive activities, maintaining that safety and security of airport operations remain a top priority. Dexter urged travelers to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities (Greater Manchester Police).

The recent arrests are part of broader actions by Just Stop Oil advocates, who in July saw eight protesters apprehended at Gatwick Airport and others engaging in various forms of protest at Heathrow Airport. These activities are connected to their call for an international Fossil Fuel Treaty aimed at ceasing the extraction and burning of fossil fuels by 2030 (Just Stop Oil)

Indigo Rumbelow, one of the jailed activists, reiterated the group’s determination, stating that their imprisonment would not deter their efforts to combat climate change. She criticized global leaders for exacerbating the climate crisis, highlighting the need for international solutions to what she described as an international emergency.
