New EU Legislation Spurs Record Rise in Mass Claims for 2023

The year 2023 saw a record number of mass claims filed in the European Union, with a sharp rise in collective actions attributed to new EU legislation on group litigation that came into effect roughly a year prior. According to a new report from UK firm CMS, a total of 133 claims were filed in the EU and the U.K, marking the highest annual number to date. Notably, the Netherlands, Germany, and Portugal accounted for most of the growth in mass litigation claims across the 27-member bloc.
