Covington & Burling and Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr played instrumental roles in the recent prisoner swap between the U.S. and Russia, which resulted in the release of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and 15 others from Russian custody. Wilmer was engaged by Wall Street Journal parent company Dow Jones to coordinate efforts outside of Russia to secure Gershkovich’s release. Simultaneously, Covington collaborated with U.S.-funded media outlet Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty to facilitate the release of another journalist, Alsu Kurmasheva.
