Coinbase and Robinhood Lead in Crypto Risk Disclosure Among Public Companies

Coinbase Global Inc., Robinhood Markets Inc., and Bakkt Holdings Inc. are among the few publicly traded companies that prominently disclose the value of their customers’ crypto assets on their balance sheets. These disclosures follow controversial accounting guidance issued by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) two years ago. The guidance requires companies to report the market value of customer crypto holdings as liabilities, which underscores the significant risks associated with these volatile assets.

According to a review of US corporate filings, only about a dozen companies have adopted this practice. The companies, including Coinbase, Robinhood, and Bakkt, have substantial crypto holdings that often amount to billions of dollars. By applying the SEC’s guidance, these companies not only comply with regulatory requirements but also signal potential risks to investors—risks that include substantial financial hits from events such as hacks or theft.

This evolving approach to crypto accounting highlights the ongoing challenges and complexities corporations face when managing digital assets. The transparency offered by these disclosures aims to provide investors with a clearer understanding of potential risks and the financial health of these companies.
