Edward O’Callaghan, who held a prominent position at the Department of Justice under Attorney General William Barr, has transitioned to Cahill Gordon & Reindel LLP, where he will serve as a partner and head the firm’s congressional investigations practice in Washington, DC, as announced by the firm.
O’Callaghan played a significant role in overseeing the FBI’s investigation into Russian election interference during his tenure at the Justice Department between 2017 and 2019, collaborating closely with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. He had primary supervisory responsibilities over Robert Mueller’s special counsel office. After leaving the Justice Department in 2020, O’Callaghan joined WilmerHale as a partner.
O’Callaghan brings with him a wealth of experience, having served as a federal prosecutor in the US Attorney’s Office in Manhattan from 1998 to 2008. During that time, he was co-chief of the Terrorism and National Security Unit and was involved in the investigation of the 2001 terrorist attacks.
At Cahill, O’Callaghan will oversee the firm’s congressional investigations practice and will serve as co-head of the DC office. He emphasizes the importance of creating a bipartisan team for congressional investigations, aiming to recruit lawyers with similar backgrounds from both the Justice Department and Capitol Hill oversight committees.
According to Herb Washer, chair of Cahill’s executive committee, O’Callaghan’s extensive government service and expertise in handling high-level congressional hearings and investigations make him a valuable addition to the firm. Washer noted that O’Callaghan’s involvement at Cahill signifies a strategic investment in bolstering the firm’s Washington, DC presence.
O’Callaghan succeeds Kiersten Fletcher, a former senior prosecutor in Manhattan’s Securities and Commodities Fraud Task Force, who joined Cahill recently as a partner.
