UC Berkeley Unveils AI-Focused LLM Program to Equip Lawyers for an Evolving Legal Landscape

In a significant step toward integrating technological advancements into legal education, the University of California’s Berkeley School of Law, a prominent member of the T14 law schools, has announced the introduction of an artificial intelligence (AI)-focused master of laws (LLM) degree. This pioneering program, which is set to commence next summer, aims to prepare legal professionals to navigate the increasingly AI-driven landscape.

According to Bloomberg Law, the curriculum has been developed in collaboration with industry leaders, including Meta Platforms Inc. and Anthropic. This collaborative effort underscores the growing synergy between legal education and AI technology. Adam Sterling, an assistant dean at Berkeley Law, highlighted the program’s suitability for both international legal practitioners and U.S. attorneys looking to future-proof their practice. Sterling emphasized the program’s comprehensive approach, which includes instruction on AI ethics, the fundamentals of AI technology, and the regulatory landscape, with a specific focus on the EU AI Act.

The program offers flexibility, allowing students to complete it either over two summers or within a year through a combination of remote work and a summer session on campus. Berkeley is currently accepting applications for what could be a transformative addition to the landscape of legal education.
