The share of Black students in the incoming class at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has dropped significantly in the wake of the Supreme Court’s ruling that effectively banned the consideration of race in undergraduate admissions. According to a report by Bloomberg, the class of 2028 will be composed of 5% Black students, down from an average of 13% in recent years. Similarly, the share of Hispanic students has also decreased to 11%, down from 15% in previous years.
In contrast, the proportion of Asian American students has increased, with 47% of the incoming class identifying as Asian American, up from 41%. This demographic shift is partly attributed to the legal challenges brought by Students for Fair Admissions, the group behind the Supreme Court case against Harvard and the University of North Carolina that culminated in the ruling against using race as a factor in college admissions.
