Starbucks at the Supreme Court: How Justices’ Preferences Shape the Cafeteria

Supreme Court justices, like many of us, have a penchant for caffeine. It may come as a surprise to some that they don’t need to venture far for their coffee fix. Interestingly, the Supreme Court’s cafeteria has its own Starbucks outlet, thanks to the efforts of its members over the years.

Among the many contributions to the cafeteria’s culinary repertoire, Justice Elena Kagan is noted for her addition of a frozen yogurt machine. The arrival of Starbucks, however, can be attributed to another justice who served on the Court’s cafeteria committee.

Each recently appointed justice has had a chance to influence what is offered in the cafeteria, making this small but significant change a reflection of their preferences. This allows not only the justices but also the staff and visitors to enjoy Starbucks coffee without stepping out of the hallowed halls of the Supreme Court.
