During a contentious confirmation hearing before the New York City Council, Randy Mastro faced intense scrutiny over his record as a litigator and his tenure as a deputy mayor under Rudy Giuliani. While under cross-examination for eight hours, Mastro, now a partner at King & Spalding and nominee for New York City Corporation Counsel, was criticized for his aggressive litigation tactics and his representation of controversial clients over the years.
The hearing highlighted Mastro’s work on behalf of Chevron, former Republican New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, and property owners opposing New York State’s COVID-19 eviction moratorium and attempting to weaken the city’s rent-stabilization laws. At one point, Mastro was even questioned about his own recent legal dispute with the city regarding a $375 municipal fine for failing to prevent false fire alarms.
