In his latest financial disclosure, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito reported no trips paid for by others in 2023, but revealed a previously unreported loan and accepted concert tickets from German socialite Gloria von Thurn und Taxis. The report, requested by Alito with a 90-day extension, highlighted that the loan from Edward Jones had been “inadvertently omitted” for several years. Initially valued between $250,001 and $500,000, the loan decreased to less than $15,000 as of last year.
Alito accepted $900 concert tickets from Princess Gloria, but the performer was not disclosed. Known as “Princess TNT” in the 1980s, she has recently been noted for her support of conservative Catholic causes, as detailed in this New York Times article. Additionally, Vanity Fair reported the princess met Alito and Justice Brett Kavanaugh with a conservative organization’s head in 2019.
The report also noted a range of stocks held by Alito, including significant investments in companies like 3M Co., Abbott Laboratories, and Boeing Co., making him the sole justice with such individual holdings. Recent transactions included exchanging Johnson & Johnson shares for Kenvue Inc. stock and selling Anheuser-Busch InBev shares to purchase Molson Coors Beverage Co. shares.
Previously, in his 2022 filing, Alito did not disclose details about a trip with hedge fund billionaire Paul Singer, funded by Singer in 2008, citing compliance with the court’s rules at the time. This year’s filing follows intensified scrutiny of Supreme Court ethics, particularly involving Alito and Justice Clarence Thomas, as outlined in Bloomberg Law.
