Ballard Spahr is set to merge with Lane Powell in a significant move within the legal industry. According to Bloomberg Law, the merger will officially take place on January 1st. The combined firm will boast more than 750 lawyers spread across 18 U.S. offices.
Currently, Ballard Spahr operates with over 600 lawyers across 15 offices in the U.S. The firm’s new chair, Peter Michaud, highlighted that growth remains a top priority. In 2023, Ballard Spahr recorded over $484 million in gross revenue. Michaud called Lane Powell a “first-rate law firm” with strong capabilities in areas Ballard Spahr aims to expand into.
Founded in 1875, Lane Powell is one of the oldest law firms in the Pacific Northwest, employing around 180 attorneys across 35 practice areas. The merger will add Anchorage, Portland, and Seattle to Ballard Spahr’s list of offices. Barbara Duffy, Lane Powell’s president, emphasized that the combination would help the firm adapt to the evolving needs of its clients while maintaining the unique aspects of Lane Powell’s business.
This merger reflects a continuing trend of consolidation in the legal industry, aimed at leveraging combined resources to better serve clients’ expanding needs.
