California Enacts New Digital Likeness Law to Protect Actors and Artists

California has introduced new legislation to fortify the rights of actors and musical artists over their digital likenesses. Governor Gavin Newsom signed the bill on Tuesday, known as AB 2602, which aims to provide enhanced contractual protections for performers when studios and other entertainment entities use digital replicas of their voices and likenesses.

The move follows demands from the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), spurred by concerns over the potential misuse of artificial intelligence to scan and replicate performers’ bodies without adequate consent or compensation. These concerns were a significant factor contributing to recent strikes in the entertainment industry.
