Amnesty International Urges Israel to Comply with UN Resolution on Ending Occupation of Palestinian Territories

Amnesty International has called on Israel to comply with a recent UN General Assembly (UNGA) resolution demanding the end of its occupation of the Occupied Palestinian Territory. The resolution, adopted by a substantial majority, mandates Israel to halt its military presence, cease settlement activities, and dismantle illegal settlements in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza.

The resolution, backed by 124 votes, requires Israel to halt settlement expansion, evacuate settlers, dismantle segments of the separation barrier in the West Bank, and return land and property seized since 1967. The UNGA emphasizes that Israel’s actions threaten regional and international peace and security, urging the country to make reparations for damages caused by its occupation.

Amnesty International’s Secretary General, Agnès Callamard, endorsed the resolution, underscoring the illegal nature of Israel’s prolonged occupation. She cited severe human rights violations under the occupation, including violence, unlawful killings, and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, as reasons for immediate action. As seen here, the assembly denounces Israel’s disregard for international law and demands accountability.

Furthermore, Amnesty has urged the international community to ensure Israel’s compliance with the resolution, calling for an immediate end to aid that supports the occupation. This includes halting arms transfers and trade with illegal settlements. The organization stresses the necessity of recording damages and holding Israel accountable for violations of the Convention for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
