Lawyers representing the New York government have requested that an appellate court lift a preliminary injunction on a forthcoming $35,000 annual cap on outside income that lawmakers may earn. This reform is scheduled to take effect on January 1. The state’s attorneys argue that the lower court should have dismissed the partisan lawsuit filed in February against the state government, its ethics watchdog, and other defendants, given that none of the plaintiffs have experienced any actual harm from a measure yet to be implemented.
In support of the cap, Assemblyman Charles Lavine, D-Glen Cove, remarked, “The days of the gentlemen farmers serving in the state Legislature are long gone.”
