In a pivotal development in the ongoing artificial intelligence copyright lawsuit against Meta, U.S. District Judge Vincent Chhabria has sharply criticized the legal team representing prominent authors. The judge stated that he has completely lost confidence in the plaintiffs’ current representation and indicated that he would not grant class certification unless the plaintiffs hire a new legal team. The lawsuit, which has been led by San Francisco antitrust and class action lawyer Joseph Saveri and Los Angeles lawyer Matthew Butterick, has failed to make significant progress 11 months after its filing.
During a recent hourlong video hearing, Judge Chhabria pointed out that the plaintiffs’ team has “failed to adequately and diligently litigate” the case. In response, Joseph Saveri acknowledged the judge’s criticisms and emphasized that he took them seriously, stating his intent to see the case through, albeit potentially with a different team. “I’ve heard you loud and clear,” Saveri affirmed.
