Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has unveiled an initiative to create a Bektashi sovereign state within the capital city of Tirana. The announcement was made during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly’s Summit of the Future. Rama emphasized the vision as a testament to Albania’s commitment to promoting religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence in a region historically affected by conflict.
Speaking from the prestigious global platform, Rama highlighted Albania’s history as a protector of human rights and its role during the Holocaust. He referred to Albania’s pride in producing Mother Teresa, quoting her to suggest that small actions performed with great love can have significant impacts. This principle forms the basis of the plan to transform the center of the Bektashi Order into a hub for peaceful coexistence.
The proposed Bektashi state will cover approximately 27 acres in Tirana and is inspired by the Vatican model, according to reports. Muslim cleric Edmond Brahimaj, also known as Baba Mondi, articulated his vision for the new state as a welcoming environment without strict lifestyle constraints. Decisions in this newly envisioned state would be made based on love and kindness, as emphasized by Baba Mondi.
Baba Mondi also addressed questions about citizenship for the new state, stating it would be limited to members of the clergy and those involved in administration, similar to the Vatican’s model. His aim for the state is to be a spiritual entity that fosters peace and moderation, allowing Bektashi followers to practice their faith without any interference.
Prime Minister Rama underscored the initiative’s significance for Albania’s national identity. He described the creation of this sovereign enclave as a statement against negative stereotypes associated with Muslims. “An avowedly moderate Islamic microstate would send a strong message: Do not let the stigma of Muslims define who Muslims are,” Rama stated.
This planned state aims to highlight Albania’s tradition of religious coexistence, enriching the Bektashi Order’s role in the region. Both Baba Mondi and Rama express hopes that this initiative will serve as a beacon of peace and acceptance, extending its influence beyond Albania.
