Haitian Advocacy Group Files Criminal Charges Against Trump and JD Vance Over False Claims

The Haitian Bridge Alliance (HBA), a non-profit organization championing the rights of Haitian immigrants, has initiated criminal proceedings against former US President Donald Trump and Senator JD Vance. This legal action follows claims by Trump and Vance suggesting Haitian immigrants in Springfield were involved in abduction and consumption of local pets. These assertions have subsequently incited panic and unrest within the local community.

The charges, filed on Tuesday in a municipal court, stem from comments made by Vance on social media and Trump during a televised debate. Vance’s statements were disseminated via social media, while Trump reiterated these allegations during a televised debate. The Haitian Bridge Alliance asserts that these actions have fostered an environment of fear and sparked multiple bomb threats in Springfield, disrupting daily life and municipal services.

Guerline Jozef, the Executive Director of HBA, remarked in a statement that the lawsuit is meant to hold Trump and Vance accountable for the significant harm caused by what she describes as a deliberate smear campaign. “Trump and Vance’s lies have harmed the Springfield community, and their lies have violated criminal law,” Jozef stated. “This is about confronting white supremacy, anti-Black rhetoric, and hate speech that seems to be a constant in U.S. politics and that continues to cause suffering. No one is above the law.”

The legal filing includes charges of disrupting public services, making false alarms, telecommunications harassment, and aggravated menacing. The lawsuit leverages R.C. 2935.09, a legal provision in Ohio that permits private citizens to file criminal charges. The court must now review the affidavit to decide on the issuance of arrest warrants for Trump and Vance.
