Welcome to Bloomberg Law’s Wake Up Call, a daily rundown of the top news for lawyers, law firms, and in-house counsel.
- Mark Robinson, the Republican gubernatorial candidate in North Carolina, has retained the services of Binnall Law Group to investigate allegations he deems to be “false smears” reported by CNN. CNN’s report claimed that Robinson had referred to himself as a “black NAZI” on a pornographic website’s message board. Robinson has threatened to sue CNN earlier in the week (The News & Observer).
- The City of London Law Society has expressed criticism over proposals by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) to introduce new fining bands that grant the authority the power to impose unlimited financial penalties on law firms and solicitors committing the gravest offenses. The society characterized the proposals as “arbitrary” and “not fit for purpose.” (Legal Cheek).
- US District Judge Tanya Chutkan has approved a request from prosecutors to file an extensive legal brief, up to 180 pages, outlining why former President Donald Trump’s actions to overturn the 2020 election should not be encased in immunity from criminal prosecution. This request follows a Supreme Court ruling in July on presidential immunity, which necessitates judicial discretion on the admissibility of specific allegations and evidence against Trump (The Washington Post).
