Visa Inc. has announced the allocation of $1.5 billion into a litigation escrow account. This significant financial move, detailed in a recent filing, is intended to cover the company’s ongoing legal costs without specifying any particular legal matters.
Among Visa’s notable legal battles is a prolonged dispute over credit-card swipe fees. Earlier this year, Visa and its industry rival, Mastercard Inc., reached a $30 billion settlement agreement with retailers to cap these fees. However, this settlement was formally rejected by a federal judge in Brooklyn in June.
Moreover, the company is currently embroiled in litigation initiated by the U.S. Justice Department. This lawsuit, which accuses Visa of engaging in monopolistic practices, was filed just recently and is another substantial legal challenge the payments firm must navigate.
