The start of the Supreme Court’s session is notable not only for its significant docket but also for the presence of attorneys making their debut before the high court. Among these is Pete Patterson, a partner at the law firm Cooper & Kirk. Despite his packed schedule, Patterson tried to get a bit of flexibility from the judiciary branch. He requested the Third Circuit Court of Appeals to reschedule his en banc argument due to his impending Supreme Court debut, arguing that the overlap presented a logistical challenge. However, the appellate court denied his request.
Patterson is, however, undaunted and will manage to argue three appeals concerning firearms legislation within a two-week window. The debut at the Supreme Court involves a high-profile challenge against the Biden administration’s prohibition on so-called “ghost guns,” an issue scheduled for October 8. Despite the added pressure, Patterson took the judges’ decision with humor, suggesting to Bloomberg Law that the lower court judges must have considerable confidence in his abilities.
This busy start to the Supreme Court’s schedule comes at a time when veteran lawyers continue to dominate the docket, reflecting the ongoing dynamics within the legal advocacy at this level.
