UN Report Condemns Israeli Attacks on Gaza Healthcare as Potential War Crimes Amid Rising Regional Tensions

A recent report from the United Nations has issued a pronouncement on Israeli military actions within the Gaza Strip, categorizing attacks on healthcare facilities and personnel as potential war crimes and crimes against humanity. The report was developed by the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel.

According to the report, between October 7, 2023, and July 30, 2024, approximately 498 attacks were reported on healthcare establishments in Gaza. These incidents resulted in 747 fatalities and left 969 individuals injured. Out of 110 facilities that were allegedly targeted, Israel maintained the stance that military operations were justified due to Hamas utilizing hospital infrastructure for military purposes. However, the UN report indicated that sufficient evidence was not provided by Israel to substantiate such claims. In interviews with medical professionals in Gaza hospitals, they denied any military activities taking place within their facilities, emphasizing their sole commitment to patient care.

In a press release accompanying the report, the chair of the commission, Navi Pillay, criticized the targeted operations against healthcare infrastructure, asserting detrimental long-term effects on civilian health rights in Gaza.

The document also delves into accusations of mistreatment concerning Palestinian detainees. During the same period, approximately 14,000 Palestinians, encompassing minors, journalists, and medical staff, were allegedly arrested. Alleged mistreatment included being stripped and transported naked, beatings, sexual assaults, and forced confessions often accompanied by death threats.

Adding a nuanced position to the ongoing conflict, the commission acknowledged reports regarding the poor treatment of 251 hostages taken by Hamas in the attack on October 7, 2023. It condemned abuses like torture, sexual violence, and other forms of mistreatment perpetrated by Hamas and associated Palestinian groups. The panel’s findings implore for both the release of these hostages and an end to Israel’s unlawful detentions and assaults on healthcare facilities.

Israel’s official response termed the UN report as a deliberate attempt by the Commission to delegitimize Israel’s existence, framing the report as an obstruction to Israel’s protective measures against its population, while ignoring crimes by terrorist entities.

This report’s publication coincides with the one-year anniversary of a significant attack on October 7 and amid escalating regional conflicts, as seen in the recent missile attacks launched from Iran. Humanitarian concerns continue to rise over the potential widening of conflicts across the Middle East, exemplified by mounting tensions on the Lebanon-Israel border, further evidenced by France’s imposition of an arms embargo on Israel.
