Antisemitic Incidents Surge by 670% in Canada Amid Global Rise, Reports Show

The Israeli Ministry for Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism has released a report that underscores a dramatic increase in antisemitic incidents in Canada following the October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel. The findings reveal a 670% rise in such incidents compared to the same period last year, marking a distressing escalation in antisemitic activities.

Despite constituting only 1.4% of the Canadian population, Jewish communities have been disproportionately affected, accounting for 70% of religiously motivated hate crimes. Highlighting the pressing nature of this issue, the report notes that 19% of all hate crimes in Toronto in 2023 targeted Jewish individuals. Included among these incidents are over 500 recorded acts of antisemitism on university campuses, which range from vandalism to more severe events like violent occupations.

The report identifies various entities contributing to the rise in antisemitic sentiments. Notable among them is the pro-Palestinian group Samidoun, recently listed as a terrorist organization by both Canadian and US authorities.

This surge in antisemitism is not isolated to Canada. Globally, similar trends are being documented. B’nai Brith Canada’s Annual Audit reported a significant 111% increase in antisemitic incidents from 2022 to 2023, while a report from November 2023 indicated that Germany saw a fourfold increase in such cases since the conflict began. Elsewhere, France and Belgium have also experienced similar trends.

These developments have also been felt within educational institutions in the United States. Rising antisemitic occurrences on university campuses have prompted the US House Committee on Education and the Workforce to initiate a formal investigation to assess the adequacy of responses from educational institutions such as Penn, Harvard, and MIT.
