Lawyers Favor Kamala Harris with $27 Million Campaign Support, Diminishing Trump’s Backing

As the presidential election approaches, financial backing from the legal community has become a significant indicator of political alignment, particularly among top law firms. Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, has witnessed overwhelming support from lawyers, who have donated over $27 million to her campaign in the past two months alone. This figure notably surpasses the contributions received by former President Donald Trump over the same period, marking a palpable preference among legal professionals.

Harris has successfully drawn substantial contributions from leading figures in major law firms. Cravath’s presiding partner, Faiza Saeed, and Sullivan & Cromwell’s senior chair, Rodge Cohen, each contributed $250,000 to the Harris Victory Fund, her political action committee (PAC). Additionally, Paul Weiss chairman Brad Karp made a substantial $25,000 donation in September. Such sizable contributions underscore the confidence and support she enjoys within the legal community.

Comparatively, Trump’s PAC, the Trump 47 Committee, did not receive any contributions from self-identified lawyers or attorneys between August and September, as reported by Bloomberg Law. Earlier this year, a few Biglaw partners and in-house attorneys did deliver funds to Trump; however, the shift in recent donations suggests that this support was not sustained. Bloomberg Law offers a detailed account of these financial trends and contributions in their report, available here.

This financial backing from the legal profession raises intriguing questions about the political influence of lawyers and their firms. Whether this support will translate into votes remains to be seen, as the ultimate test arises during the elections. For the legal community and the broader electorate, the outcomes are eagerly anticipated. Read more about the campaign contributions and the legal community’s involvement on Above the Law.
