In a noteworthy shift in the competitive landscape of trainee compensation, McDermott Will & Emery has announced a salary increase for its trainees in London. This move comes on the heels of a similar adjustment by Davis Polk & Wardwell, which occurred last month. McDermott’s decision aligns with a broader trend among US-based law firms looking to invest in their junior talent in the United Kingdom.
As per the recent statement from the firm, first-year trainees will see their salaries rise from £53,000 to £65,000 ($91,500), while those in their second year will experience an increase from £58,300 to £70,000. This pay raise is aimed at ensuring that McDermott remains competitive in attracting and retaining top legal talent amidst a thriving market for legal services in London.
Aymen Mahmoud, the managing partner of McDermott’s London office, indicated that this development is part of the firm’s broader strategic focus. “We pride ourselves on being a leading career accelerant for our people globally,” Mahmoud stated, emphasizing the importance of offering not only market-leading compensation but also a supportive culture and promising career opportunities.
This adjustment in compensation reflects ongoing efforts by US law firms to bolster their presence in the London legal market, an environment characterized by fierce competition for young talent. With law firms continuing to expand their footprint in the UK, such measures serve as a critical component of their talent acquisition strategies.
