Discover Names Kelly Welsh as Interim Chief Legal Officer Amid Leadership Strengthening Initiative

Discover Financial Services has named Kelly Welsh as its interim chief legal officer, general counsel, and head of corporate and public affairs, as announced Tuesday. Welsh’s new role places him on Discover’s executive management committee.

Welsh brings a wealth of experience to Discover, having previously held several significant legal roles. Before this appointment, he served as the general counsel of the U.S. Department of Commerce. Additionally, he has held the position of executive vice president and general counsel at Northern Trust and Ameritech, where he also participated on their management committees. Welsh’s experience extends further back to public service as the corporation counsel for the City of Chicago and to private practice as a partner at Mayer Brown.

This new role marks an important transition for Welsh and Discover, aligning with the company’s ongoing commitment to strengthening its leadership team amidst evolving business challenges. For Discover, Welsh’s appointment is expected to provide valuable insight and guidance, leveraging his extensive legal and corporate governance expertise.
