Increasing Diversity in Legal Tech: A Call to Action Ahead of Startup Alley at ABA TECHSHOW 2025

As the search for diverse founders of legal tech startups intensifies, industry insiders are rallying support for greater representation at the 9th annual Startup Alley at the upcoming ABA TECHSHOW 2025. The event, occurring in Chicago from April 2-5, aims to showcase innovative legal technology solutions and hopes to draw participation from founders of varied backgrounds.

Previous editions of Startup Alley have demonstrated a commendable level of diversity in both applicants and finalists, encompassing a range of gender and racial identities. Despite this progress, there was a noticeable decline in diversity among the finalists at last year’s event. Nearly all presenters at last year’s pitch competition were white men, highlighting a significant gap between the diversity of the applicant pool and the final presentations.

The selection of finalists is based on a popular vote, a process that presents challenges in ensuring diverse representation among finalists. In response to last year’s outcome, conversations with past diverse winners and finalists concluded that rather than setting aside spots for minorities, efforts should focus on increasing the diversity of applicants from the outset — “filling the top of the funnel.”

The call to action is clear: if you are a part of a startup with diverse leadership or know of one, consider encouraging applications to Startup Alley. The hope is to transform these applications into a broader representation in the final round. Organizations and incubators can play a vital role by disseminating this opportunity among their diverse memberships.

Participation in Startup Alley has proven beneficial for many past participants, serving as a notable platform for growth and exposure in the legal tech sector. For those considering applying, further information and the application form are available here. The deadline for submissions is December 13, 2024.
