Georgia Appeals Court Cancels Hearing on DA’s Role in Trump Case Amid Legal Battles

In a recent development, the Georgia Court of Appeals has canceled the scheduled December 5th hearing concerning the potential removal of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from the criminal case involving Donald Trump. This decision eliminates a legal obstacle as the president-elect prepares to assume office on January 20, 2025. The court did not provide details regarding the cancellation, merely stating the hearing was “cancelled until further notice.”

Donald Trump’s legal team contends that DA Willis should be disqualified from the case due to an alleged romantic involvement with her lead prosecutor. Despite ongoing efforts, Trump’s attorneys have so far been unsuccessful in derailing criminal cases against him in state courts in both New York and Georgia. Nevertheless, they have intensified their legal strategies following Trump’s election victory over Kamala Harris. Concurrently, the special counsel handling Trump’s federal cases is reportedly planning to discontinue those prosecutions ahead of the inauguration.

The legal proceedings in Georgia accuse Trump and 14 co-defendants of conspiring to disseminate false claims regarding voter fraud during the 2020 presidential election, with efforts to pressure state officials to invalidate Joe Biden’s victory. Although Trump maintains his innocence, four co-defendants have pled guilty. Trump currently faces eight felony counts in the state after certain charges were dismissed by the presiding judge in Atlanta.
