Global Human Rights Coalition Urges UN Intervention for Narges Mohammadi’s Urgent Medical Release from Iranian Prison

In a recent development, a coalition of human rights organizations has called on the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to exert pressure on Iranian authorities for the immediate medical release of Narges Mohammadi, a prominent Iranian human rights activist. This plea arrives amid concerns over her deteriorating health while incarcerated in Evin Prison, Tehran. The coalition’s joint letter, which includes the efforts of over 40 human rights organizations spearheaded by the Free Narges Coalition, underscores the necessity for urgent medical furlough on humanitarian grounds.

Narges Mohammadi, a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and an accomplished human rights advocate and author, has been subjected to multiple lengthy sentences since her arrest in November 2021. Her charges include “propaganda activity against the state” and “collusion against state security.” Throughout her legal ordeals, which have seen her spend over a decade in prison cumulatively, Mohammadi’s health has reportedly worsened due to a lack of adequate medical care, including delayed cardiac and oncological treatments.

The organizations urge not only for Mohammadi’s full and unconditional release, citing that she ought not to have been imprisoned, to begin with, but also emphasize the aggravating health crisis faced by Mohammadi due to what is described as “arbitrary medical neglect.” Reports have surfaced detailing instances of violence against her by prison guards, as well as systematic denial of medical treatment for her ongoing health issues, including heart conditions and a potentially cancerous bone lesion.

The situation has garnered international attention, prompting the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to release a statement in August 2024, which highlighted the dire circumstances surrounding Mohammadi and other detainees, advocating for their release and the need to address the systemic ill-treatment of prisoners in Iran. The request to the UNHRC coincides with Iran’s upcoming review under the Council’s Universal Periodic Review mechanism, offering a timely opportunity for international scrutiny over Iran’s human rights practices.

The petition reflects broader concerns about the pattern of medical neglect in Iranian prisons, portraying a bleak picture of the human rights situation and the challenges faced by activists like Mohammadi who continue to endure harsh conditions due to their advocacy efforts. As advocates continue to rally for Mohammadi’s freedom, the international legal community and observers remain attentive to the unfolding responses from both the Iranian government and global human rights institutions.
