Cravath Swaine & Moore Aligns with Milbank on Year-End and Special Associate Bonuses Amid Rising Legal Industry Revenues

In the latest move in the compensation strategies of leading law firms, Cravath Swaine & Moore has decided to match Milbank LLP’s bonus structure for its associates. This announcement comes as the year-end bonus season begins to take shape, presenting significant financial implications for associates across major law firms.

Cravath, historically known for setting compensation benchmarks among Big Law firms, declared its plan to offer both annual and special bonuses. The bonuses range from $15,000 to $115,000 for the year-end bonus, and from $6,000 to $25,000 for special bonuses. Payment dates are set for December 13 for associates in New York and Washington, with London-based associates receiving their bonuses on December 16. This move closely mirrors the structure earlier implemented by Milbank, described as a front-runner in the associate compensation arena.

As reported by Bloomberg Law, Milbank had earlier rolled out special bonuses in the summer, which initially saw a cautious response from peer firms. This latest development potentially places pressure on other top-tier firms to follow suit, bringing attention to the competition for associate retention and recruitment.

The bonus announcements coincide with a broader trend of recovery in the legal industry, as firms rebounded from two challenging post-pandemic years. A report from Citi’s Global Wealth at Work Law Firm Group indicates that law firm revenues grew nearly 12% over the first three quarters of 2024 compared to the previous year, underpinned by robust demand and increased productivity.

It remains to be seen which firms will follow Cravath and Milbank’s lead in this highly competitive market, as the legal industry continues to navigate the balance between rewarding current talent and maintaining financial health.
