Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets across France on Saturday to voice their opposition to femicides and sexual violence against women. The trial involves a husband who drugged his wife and allowed over 50 men to assault her, undetected, over 12 years. The protesters’ demands include public policies for greater protection measures for women and vulnerable groups. This includes initiatives like educational programs, service shelters, and a significant budgetary allocation of at least 2.6 billion Euros, representing 0.5 percent of the French State budget, dedicated to these protective measures.
In conjunction with these demonstrations, Human Rights Watch has also raised concerns about the rights of women and girls following the re-election of Donald Trump as U.S. President. The organization warns that Trump’s leadership may have broader implications for women’s rights globally.
The UN’s Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women (1993) and subsequent documents such as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights underscore the importance of protecting women’s rights worldwide. These international frameworks are instrumental in the long-standing global call for gender equality, as highlighted in the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The demonstration is in line with the UN’s initiative, which commences on 25 November 2024 with 16 days of activism aimed at eradicating violence against women, culminating on International Human Rights Day.
