Mayer Brown, a prominent international law firm, announced the reorganization of its Asia operations with the establishment of a new office in Hong Kong. This strategic shift signifies a departure from its long-standing partnership with Johnson Stokes & Master, a collaboration that began in 2008. The restructured Hong Kong branch now operates independently, marking a new chapter in Mayer Brown’s regional presence.
The firm, which once held a considerable presence in Hong Kong with 160 lawyers through its alliance with Johnson Stokes & Master, will now function with a leaner team of over 20 attorneys. These legal professionals are set to focus on key areas such as capital markets, mergers and acquisitions, finance, and energy-related legal services. The office will be managed by Thomas Kollar, a partner specialized in capital markets.
This move represents Mayer Brown’s effort to adapt to the dynamic legal landscape in Asia and redefine its market strategy. The departure from its previous collaboration allows Johnson Stokes & Master to operate independently once again, potentially recuperating its local autonomy and focus.
