A new lawsuit has stirred controversy around Amazon’s delivery practices, as it accuses the e-commerce behemoth of deliberately slowing deliveries in certain areas and misleading customers regarding the delays. Filed by District of Columbia Attorney General Brian Schwalb, the suit claims that Amazon knowingly failed to inform customers in specific ZIP codes about a change to their delivery service, which resulted in slower-than-promised shipments.
The case points to an alleged discrepancy in how Amazon communicated these delays to its customers. As highlighted by Ars Technica, the retailer used third-party services to ensure driver safety in high-risk areas. Nevertheless, customers in these regions were left feeling deceived, with some reportedly being given misleading advice when seeking assistance through Amazon’s customer support channels.
In response, Amazon has ardently denied the accusations, stating that their operational adjustments were implemented to protect delivery personnel, not deceive customers. Kelly Nantel, an Amazon spokesperson, asserted that the company remains transparent with customers about delivery times during the shopping and checkout processes.
Though the lawsuit does not dispute the safety rationale, it insists that Amazon has a duty to notify its subscribers about the ensuing delivery delays. AG Schwalb argues that affected customers are entitled to refunds or reduced subscription fees, citing that current practices unjustly exploit them by charging for the fast delivery service they seldom receive. The AG’s lawsuit seeks civil damages meant to discourage Amazon from engaging in such practices in the future, potentially exposing the company to millions in liabilities due to numerous unresolved delivery issues since mid-2022.
Despite these serious allegations, Amazon has expressed willingness to engage with Schwalb’s office to improve conditions in the affected areas while maintaining their stance against altering how they advertise Prime delivery benefits.
