The international press freedom organization has demanded that the Cambodian government take swift action to ensure justice for the murder of environmental journalist Chhoeung Chheng. This incident underscores a disturbing trend of violence against journalists, especially those investigating illegal activities such as deforestation.
Chhoeung Chheng, who reported for the online media outlet Kampuchea Aphivath, succumbed to his injuries on December 7, after being shot two days prior in Siem Reap. His work frequently put him in perilous situations, as he was known for uncovering ecological crimes in remote forest areas. The alleged assailant, who was apprehended shortly after the attack, purportedly acted out of personal vendetta, having been exposed by Chheng in illegal logging operations. He confessed to using a homemade weapon in the assault.
Cambodia has a history of violence against journalists covering illegal logging, as evident in the fatal shooting of Taing Try a decade ago. Both RSF and organizations like Freedom House have expressed concerns over the declining media freedom in Cambodia, marked by government crackdowns on independent outlets and harassment of journalists. The closure of “Voice of Democracy” and the recent legal proceedings against journalists for their work exemplify these challenges.
The UN has also voiced concerns; in September, experts called for the suspension of Cambodia’s Charter of Professional Journalism, urging reforms to prioritize public interest. The case of an award-winning journalist arrested and later released on bail after being charged with inciting unrest further illustrates the precarious situation for journalists in the region.
Amidst these growing concerns, RSF’s statement urging Cambodia to end violence against journalists aims to spotlight the necessity for tangible measures to protect press freedom and hold accountable those who endanger journalists’ lives.
