UN Envoy Highlights Urgent Need for Humanitarian Aid in Post-Assad Syria

The United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, emphasized the critical need for humanitarian assistance following the collapse of the Assad regime during his visit to Damascus. Pedersen highlighted the exigency of the situation, urging the international community to prioritize aid provisions to address the sustained humanitarian crisis impacting millions of Syrians.

His statement came on the heels of a plea by the UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria for all parties in the conflict to adhere strictly to international humanitarian law. This urgent appeal underscores the need to ensure civilian protection amidst ongoing hostilities.

Pedersen further advocated for support mechanisms enabling refugees to return safely to Syria, underscoring the fundamental role of humanitarian aid in stabilizing the region. This, he noted, is imperative for any successful political transition which should be inclusive and Syrian-led, but facilitated through international support.

Addressing economic challenges, Pedersen conveyed a sense of optimism about the potential lifting of sanctions by entities such as the United States and the European Union to aid Syria’s reconstruction efforts. He urged a swift approach to economic recovery, noting the removal of these barriers as essential for rebuilding.

In addition to immediate humanitarian and economic concerns, Pedersen also stressed the importance of establishing justice and accountability for past injustices through a reliable judicial system. He reiterated the necessity for transparent processes, devoid of retaliation, to ensure fairness.

Pedersen concluded with remarks pointing to a growing international consensus aimed at supporting Syria during this transitional period. His discussions in Aqaba highlighted a shared resolve among global players to assist the nation, reflecting a unified desire to promote stability and peace in Syria.

As Syria navigates this pivotal phase, the envoy’s call for comprehensive humanitarian support remains at the forefront, setting a foundation of relief and optimism for Syria’s path forward.
