UN Human Rights Experts Urge Accountability for Israel’s Alleged Violations of International Law

A collective of United Nations human rights experts has publicly criticized Israel for what they describe as its systematic attempts to undermine international law. The experts, comprising Special Rapporteurs and Independent Experts, emphasize the necessity of holding Israel accountable for its actions, stressing that accountability is pivotal for upholding the rule of law and human rights protection. The full statement can be accessed through the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The UN experts have spotlighted various allegations against Israel, including war crimes and crimes against humanity. Specific examples cited include the use of starvation as a weapon, targeting healthcare workers and facilities amid ongoing armed conflict, and attacks on humanitarian workers and journalists. Criticism extends to Israel’s alleged collective punishment and acts of perfidy, referencing a UN report published in February earlier this year that called for accountability for violations of international law.

According to Paula Gaviria Betancur, the Special Rapporteur on the human rights of internally displaced persons, recent siege conditions in northern Gaza illustrate Israel’s disregard for obligations under international law. Betancur has advocated for immediate international intervention to lift the siege and protect civilians.

The report further highlights the role of Israel’s allies in allegedly shielding it from international censure. Despite consistent warnings from significant international bodies such as the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court, the experts argue that attempts to impart consequences remain insufficient, as detailed by Irene Khan, Special Rapporteur on the right to freedom of opinion and expression. Khan and others within the group argue that the perceived impunity sends a problematic signal that international law can be flouted without repercussions.

In their statement, the UN experts urge concerted action from the international community, recommending potential measures like economic sanctions, diplomatic isolation, and international prosecution to hold those responsible accountable. They also call for support for Palestinian self-determination, underscoring the importance of halting the ongoing assaults to maintain the integrity of the multilateral system.
