In the latest development in the transatlantic legal market, U.K.-based Clyde & Co. has announced a merger with American firm Tillman Batchelor LLC. This move comes in the wake of the recent A&O Shearman merger, another significant U.K.-U.S. firm combination. Known for its expertise in insurance law, Clyde & Co. recorded a gross revenue of $1.05 billion in 2023, ranking eighth in the U.K. Top 50 and 63rd in the 2024 Global 100.
The union with the Texas-based boutique marks Clyde & Co.’s first foothold in the Lone Star State, significantly expanding its U.S. presence with the addition of seven lawyers in Dallas. The strategic move is part of a broader ambition to strengthen its service offerings to the insurance sector across North America. Eileen King Bower, chair of Clyde & Co’s North American board, noted the “timing was right” for this tie-up, as it aligns with the firm’s expansion objectives in the United States.
The firm currently operates 19 offices in North America and plans further growth, targeting new locations in Houston and Washington State in response to client demand. “Our aim is to really be the No. 1 provider of services to the insurance sector in North America,” Bower stated in an interview with American Lawyer.
