Despite the harsh winter conditions with freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall, hundreds of South Koreans have mobilized overnight near the residence of the impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol in Hannam-dong, Seoul. The demonstrators are calling for his arrest and subsequent imprisonment, reflecting the deep political divisions within the country. Their resolve appears unwavering as the expiration date for President Yoon’s arrest warrant looms.
To recap, the South Korean National Assembly successfully impeached President Yoon, garnering 204 votes, significantly more than the two-thirds majority required in the 300-member legislative body. This decision came just eleven days after Yoon controversially declared martial law on December 3, 2024. Amidst escalating political tensions, the Seoul Western District Court had previously approved an arrest warrant for Yoon on charges of insurrection and abuse of power alongside a search warrant for his official residence.
As the arrest warrant’s expiration on January 6 approaches, the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) is considering executing the arrest on the final day of the warrant’s validity. An official document was sent by the CIO to Acting President Choi Sang-mok, urging him to order compliance by the Presidential Security Service regarding the arrest warrant. The initial execution attempt on January 3 was reportedly unsuccessful, leading to plans for a retry. Adverse weather conditions have contributed to the delay, causing a rescheduling of a second attempt originally intended for the 5th to the following day.
In anticipation of these efforts to arrest Yoon, around 40 members of the People’s Power Party (PPP) are expected to assemble in front of Yoon’s residence on January 6, aiming to obstruct the CIO from executing the warrant. Reports from local media suggest this political standoff is set to intensify as the deadline nears.
