Spellbook’s “Playbooks” Revolutionizes In-House Legal Contract Review with AI Precision

In a significant move aimed at revolutionizing how in-house legal teams manage contract reviews, Spellbook, the company known for its generative AI copilot for legal tasks, has launched a new feature called “Playbooks.” This feature is crafted specifically for corporate legal departments and promises to enhance the speed and consistency of contract reviews. According to Scott Stevenson, Spellbook’s cofounder and CEO, Playbooks allows legal teams to calibrate AI to negotiate and review documents as a general counsel would, utilizing specific preferred language and fallback options. This novel approach allows for a much faster review process—up to ten times quicker according to the company.

Historically, Spellbook’s offerings were predominantly used by law firms, but over the previous year, they have collaborated with over 160 in-house teams to refine their latest addition. Companies such as Nestlé, Crocs, Fender, BDO Unibank, and WSP Global Consulting have been key contributors in shaping Playbooks. Stevenson notes that in-house legal teams often fall into the repetitive cycle of reviewing similar contracts against identical benchmarks, and existing AI solutions failed to provide the consistency these organizations required for high-volume tasks.

The Playbooks feature is not exclusive to in-house teams; law firms, too, can utilize it to establish standard practices for client contract assessments. The functionality of Playbooks allows legal teams to codify their contract review processes swiftly, employing either predefined or custom rule sets. Upon execution, the system evaluates contract provisions, categorizing them as either passing or failing. For flagged issues, Playbooks offers AI-generated suggestions along with the user’s preferred wording.

Additionally, Playbooks automates the process of responding to a set list of questions with citations, streamlining the legal review process further. This new tool is now available to all Spellbook clients, with a seven-day free trial offered for new users.
