EU Orders X to Disclose Algorithm Documents amid Political Investigations

In a recent development, the European Union has demanded that Elon Musk’s platform, X, provide full disclosure of its recommendation algorithm’s changes. The European Commission is intensifying its investigation into the role that the social media platform plays in European political dynamics. According to the Financial Times, this expanded probe mandates X to submit internal documents detailing recent and prospective changes to its recommendation systems.

The European Commission has also issued a retention order for all related documents, signaling its intent to closely scrutinize how the algorithm might be modified in the future. As part of its regulatory efforts, the EU is acquiring information on the moderation and amplification practices employed by the platform.

This regulatory action has been catalyzed by concerns expressed by German politicians regarding algorithmic promotion of far-right content in the lead-up to Germany’s elections scheduled for February. Musk has been vocal in his support of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which has stirred political contention within the country. Despite inquiries regarding the link between the investigation and Musk’s recent interview with AfD co-leader Alice Weidel, the European Commission maintains that its decision is rooted in neutral oversight over online activities, independent of political events or affiliations.

The EU Commission, represented by its digital chief, Henna Virkkunen, emphasized the EU’s commitment to ensuring that digital platforms operating in Europe adhere to legislation designed to safeguard an equitable, safe, and democratic digital environment for all citizens.

As of now, X has not issued any comments on the EU’s requests. © 2025 The Financial Times Ltd.
