NYC Department of Buildings Faces Federal Lawsuit Over Alleged Race and Gender Discrimination Practices

A New York City agency’s former attorney has initiated legal proceedings against the city and its Department of Buildings, accusing them of contravening race and gender bias legislation. The complaint, filed in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York, details allegations of discriminatory conduct by a supervisor, involving racially charged language and behavior directed at the plaintiff and other Black employees.

The plaintiff, Shelia Cockburn, claims the infringement of federal, state, and city anti-discrimination laws, specifying that her supervisor engaged in hostile racial speech, including the use of “Ebonics” and a variation of the N-word. Cockburn, who is herself Black, argues these actions created a discriminatory work environment.

The case, filed under docket number 1:25-cv-00647, seeks to address these alleged violations via the Southern District of New York’s judicial system. The full article detailing these developments can be found on Bloomberg Law.
