INTERPOL and AFRIPOL’s Joint Operation in East Africa Leads to 37 Arrests in Counter-Terrorism Effort

INTERPOL, in coordination with AFRIPOL, recently undertook a significant counter-terrorism operation in East Africa, leading to the arrest of 37 suspects purportedly linked to organizations such as ISIS and Al Shabaab. This operation, which took place on Monday, was crucial in seizing small arms and heavy weapons, affirming the ongoing global concerns surrounding terrorist activities in the region. The collaboration between INTERPOL and AFRIPOL reflects a strengthened international effort in combating terrorism.

The operation resulted in the arrest of various suspected terrorist affiliates, including three individuals in Somalia, one of whom is believed to be a bomb maker and another linked to Al Shabaab. Al Shabaab, an al-Qaeda affiliate, has been responsible for numerous severe attacks in East Africa, including high-profile incidents like the 2013 Westgate Mall attack in Kenya (learn more).

Further arrests were made in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where four suspected members of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) were detained. The ADF, notorious for committing extensive human rights abuses such as child abductions and sexual violence, remains a security challenge in the region (more details).

The success of this operation is attributed to strategic investigations and robust on-the-ground data analysis conducted by both INTERPOL and AFRIPOL officers. The collaborative engagement underscores the capability of international institutions to address the complexities of modern terrorism effectively. INTERPOL’s Acting Executive Director, Cyril Gout, emphasized the importance of such collaboration, stating, “These positive results demonstrate the power of international collaboration in the fight against terrorism.”

This operation was a part of the INTERPOL Support Programme for the African Union in relation to AFRIPOL (ISPA) framework, a program aimed at bolstering AFRIPOL’s efforts to tackle cross-border crime and terrorism in Africa. INTERPOL’s involvement in various regional initiatives, including the INTERPOL East African Community (I-EAC) project, continues to play a significant role in maintaining peace and security across East Africa. These initiatives are designed to address and mitigate the emerging threats posed by transnational terrorist networks in the area (full article).
