Libya Discovers Mass Graves Amid Growing Migrant Crisis: Authorities and IOM Urge Action

Libyan authorities have uncovered nearly 50 bodies in two mass graves situated in the southeastern desert, exemplifying the formidable dangers that migrants face while traversing through the unstable nation on their journey to Europe. This recent discovery comes amidst a longstanding and difficult migrant crisis affecting the region.

The first mass grave, holding 19 bodies, was located on a farm in Kufra last Friday. Subsequently, a second grave was discovered through a police operation at a suspected human trafficking site. This grave contained at least 30 bodies, but survivors have claimed that up to 70 individuals may have been buried there. Security forces in Libya are continuing their search for further remains.

Mohamed al-Fadeil, head of the security chamber in Kufra, reported that the raid led to the rescue of 76 migrants who were being held in harsh conditions. As part of the operation, three suspects, including a Libyan and two foreign nationals, were arrested for allegedly detaining and torturing migrants. Libyan security forces have vowed to intensify their efforts against human trafficking operations throughout the country.

According to the al-Abreen charity, which supports migrants in eastern and southern Libya, some bodies exhibited gunshot wounds, implying potential executions. The deceased have been transported for autopsy, and authorities are focusing on victim identification and family notification.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has called upon Libyan authorities to ensure the dignified recovery of the deceased migrants, emphasizing the often-overlooked risks associated with land routes, where fatalities often go unreported. The IOM has urged authorities to bolster protective measures and enhance data collection methods.

Libya’s role as a transit point for migrants from Africa and the Middle East en route to Europe has persisted since the 2011 ousting of Muammar Gaddafi. The country has since been engulfed in turmoil, characterized by competing governments and militias vying for dominance.

The recent discovery parallels a similar incident in March 2024, when 65 migrant bodies were located in the Shuayrif region. Following that grim finding, the UN Support Mission in Libya implored Libyan authorities to investigate all allegations of mistreatment and infringements within detention centers. This situation highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis and the dire need for international cooperation to address the continual plight of migrants in Libya.
