Trust accounting is a significant challenge within the legal profession, with violations often leading to disciplinary actions. Many lawyers, especially those in solo and small firms, still depend on manual methods to handle their client funds accounts, increasing the risk of errors. Recognizing this critical issue, partnerships between a number of state bar associations and law practice management company Smokeball now provide nearly 500,000 U.S. lawyers with free access to trust accounting and billing software. This initiative is specifically designed to aid smaller firms in staying compliant with trust account regulations.
This effort began in June with a partnership between Smokeball and the State Bar of Texas, offering free access to Smokeball Bill software to 111,000 of its members. Since then, similar collaborations have expanded this benefit to members of nine other state bar associations, representing nearly 40% of the country’s 1.32 million active lawyers.
The participating bar associations include those of New York, California, Virginia, Maryland, Alabama, Oklahoma, Colorado, Nebraska, as well as the D.C. Bar. According to Ruchie Chadha, President of Smokeball U.S., the agreement with bar associations aims to eliminate barriers by providing attorneys with essential tools needed for effective trust account management and billing. Smokeball views this as a partnership that supports compliance, a significant concern for bar associations and their members.
The approach seems to be resonating with the legal community. Jane Oxley, Chief Revenue Officer of Smokeball, reports positive feedback from lawyers who have adopted the software, indicating that they find it an invaluable addition to their practice—although Smokeball did not disclose how many lawyers have signed up.
Besides merely offering free software, this initiative includes educational components focused on financial literacy, as financial mismanagement remains a common issue among legal professionals. Smokeball is currently engaged in negotiations with other bar associations to expand the program’s reach further, underscoring its commitment to bolstering legal practice management across the country.
This collaborative effort offers mutual benefits. State bars enhance their support to members by addressing compliance issues, while Smokeball gains exposure and potential future customers for its full practice management platform. For lawyers, especially those managing smaller practices, this tool could play a key role in maintaining financial compliance and mitigating risk, thus freeing up more time to focus on the practice of law.
