UN Condemns Israeli Actions in West Bank Amidst Escalating Civilian Casualties and Displacement

The United Nations Human Rights Office (OHCHR) has issued a strong condemnation of Israel’s ongoing military operations in the West Bank, pressing for an immediate cessation of the “alarming wave of violence and mass displacement”. This call from the OHCHR arose amidst reports of unlawful killings of Palestinian civilians which resumed on January 21, 2025. According to the OHCHR, Israeli security forces have been responsible for at least 44 civilian deaths, with many victims reportedly unarmed and posing no immediate threat. Among the casualties are a pregnant woman and a 10-year-old boy in Tulkarem City.

The OHCHR is actively documenting what it terms an “unlawful use of force” in a region they assert currently has “no active hostilities”. Beyond loss of life, there is a notable increase in displacement, adding to already significant humanitarian concerns. Daily accounts from displaced residents submitted to the UN Human Rights Office indicate a pattern of forced evacuations under threat, as Israeli forces move individuals out of their homes with armed presence in their neighborhoods.

In response, the OHCHR has insisted that any forcible deportation from occupied territories constitutes a crime under international law and demanded that displaced Palestinians be permitted to return home. These demands extend to a broader call for Israel to honor its international obligations, which include swiftly ending its presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and the immediate removal of West Bank settlements. Furthermore, as the occupying power, Israel is reminded of its responsibility to safeguard the rights and needs of the Palestinian people.

The situation remains tense following a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas reached on January 15, which came after 15 months of heightened conflict initiated by a significant assault on October 7, 2023. This conflict led to heavy casualties and extensive destruction within Gaza, alongside widespread displacement. Nevertheless, the OHCHR points to ongoing military actions by Israel despite this ceasefire. Recent statements from US and Israeli officials discussing plans to resettle Gaza further complicate the landscape, proposing the displacement of Palestinians from the region.
