OpenAI Faces Legal Hurdle: Indian Media Giants File Copyright Lawsuit

OpenAI, the Microsoft-backed artificial intelligence firm, is confronting legal challenges in India as a group of major media companies has initiated a lawsuit alleging copyright infringement. The litigation, filed by entities including the Delhi-based news agency Asian News International (ANI) at the Delhi High Court, marks a significant legal action against AI platforms in India. A hearing is scheduled for March 18, as noted on the court’s website.

This Indian case parallels similar legal actions in other countries. The New York Times Co. raised comparable copyright allegations against OpenAI in the U.S. in December 2023, while a consortium of notable Canadian media organizations lodged a claim in Ontario the preceding year.
