Harmeet Dhillon, a California-based litigator recently nominated to head the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division, has announced plans to sell her law firm, Dhillon Law, to her brother Mandeep Dhillon. This decision comes as part of a pledge to divest herself from potential conflicts of interest if confirmed for the DOJ position. Dhillon, known for her prior advisory role to former President Donald Trump and high-profile litigation on social issues, disclosed these intentions in a Senate committee questionnaire on January 27.
The firm’s sale price remains undisclosed, although Dhillon has confirmed that she will continue to notify DOJ officials should any conflicts arise involving her firm or her nonprofit organization, the Center for American Liberty. This entity, through which she has championed several legal challenges, has amassed over $15 million to support pro bono legal services.
Dhillon Law has a history of serving as outside counsel to Trump’s 2020 presidential campaign and represents notable clients such as Elon Musk’s X Corp. and former Fox News host Tucker Carlson. Her personal financial disclosure cites a net worth of $11.7 million, with additional potential earnings from outstanding cases and ongoing litigation.
In her career, Dhillon has undertaken significant cases, such as litigating against a California school district for purportedly facilitating a minor’s gender transition without parental consent and challenging Covid-related congregation restrictions for churches. She has also represented a conservative student organization against the University of California, Berkeley over free speech rights. One notable effort includes her attempt to reverse a Colorado Supreme Court decision preventing Trump from appearing on the state’s ballot.
