Jones Day Bolsters Patent and Life Sciences Practices with Strategic Hire of Former Weil Leaders

In a strategic move, Jones Day is strengthening its patent litigation and life sciences practices by hiring Edward Reines, formerly of Weil, Gotshal & Manges. Reines departs after a 32-year tenure, where he served as the head of the patent litigation and life sciences practices. Joining him in this transition is fellow Weil partner Derek Walter. Reines will be based in Jones Day’s Silicon Valley office, while Walter will join the San Francisco location.

This shift arrives amidst changes at Weil, particularly following the departure of co-chair Elizabeth Weiswasser, who, along with a significant portion of Weil’s patent litigation team, moved to Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison last year. Jones Day anticipates that the duo’s expertise in genomics and life sciences will synergize with its existing technology client base, potentially enhancing service offerings and client strategies.
