“Law Firms Increase In-Office Work Requirements Amid ‘Safety in Numbers’ Trend”

As the trend toward increased in-office work continues, Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr is the most recent large law firm to require its attorneys to be present in the office four days a week starting April 28. This decision follows the lead of several other major firms, including Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, which have adopted similar policies. The move may be indicative of a broader shift spurred by the “safety in numbers” mindset, wherein firms feel some level of assurance by mirroring their competitors’ policies. Motivating compliance with these mandates, some firms have opted to adjust bonuses based on office attendance records.
